I've used the host file for years (for blocking banner ads, mostly) and
Windows has never replaced it with another file. Assuming you used Notepad
to edit it, are you sure you named it HOSTS and _not_ HOSTS.TXT? Perhaps
you could change the file's properties to make it read-only.
