I have just recently d/l'd aresgalaxy from sourceforge and it seems to be a
good replacement for winmx. Similar enough for the learning curve to be
small, yet seems to have benefits that winmx could not deliver.

Btw, winmx is the only p2p app I have used.

What's to like about aresgalaxy?

Well after 1 hour of use, sharing the same files as with winmx these are my
observations.

1 - its open source, that means its less vulnerable to a cease & desist than
winmx.
2 - so far I've d/l'd more than I've u/l'd - does that make me a leach? I
don't think so because it seems that ares uses a different method of
spreading the load. Remember these are initial impressions after about 1
hour of use. But over the same period of time using winmx I think I
would've been able to d/l less and more users would've connected and u/l'd
more from me. End result - I'm not getting hammered by leaches. At this
stage still haven't been able to work out how to browse what an individual
is sharing.
3 - content is not as good as winmx.
4 - no help menu/page, but winmx had a help button that led you to a page
that said help was under development.
5 - harder to share files than in winmx.
6 - it works.
7 - d/l speeds are at least equal to winmx.
8 - the network seems to be far more decentralised than winmx, more sources
and less burden on those sharing.

I've never had any reason to use anything other than winmx, and I installed
the host file fix, but I think from now on ares will be my p2p app - it just
seems better.
