I haven't been following all the threads closely, so my only
confusion is why all the confusion?

My setup: an old Win98SE box running WinMX 3.53. Since I have DSL
I run WinMX as a primary connection with the appropriate ports opened
on my firewall.

When Norton Antivirus was installed some years ago it created a
HOSTS file in my C:\WINDOWS directory.

So *ALL I DID* was run http://www.vladd44.com/files/PIEPatch2.5.exe
which added all the WinMX related IPs to my HOSTS file and now I'm
able to connect again and upload and download just as before.

Am I missing something here? Is it supposed to be more complicated?

The only continuing irritation is the shitload of fake files that
come up with any search result for MP3s of fairly new music. The
simplest workaround tip I've found for identifying the nonfakes is
to only go after those with queues of one or more.
