My comment about Google Groups was (in this case) not an admonishment, but 
rather intended to provide some more information on the trim 10k option, 
opinions and user experience for those who might want to learn more. 
 
As for wondering if "Google is going to be the death of Usenet", I seem to 
recall a similar question being raised with the advent of web-based 
discussion forums. So far, the two seem to be co-existing nicely, with a 
lot of cross-referencing going on. 
 
I would say it is the often volatile mix of information/misinformation, 
sarcasm, opinion and genuine trolling that results in those flame wars for 
which usenet is infamous. True, the very thing that has some people running 
screaming to the exit has others pulling up a comfortable chair to stay 
awhile. 
 
Yes, things can be a little more "personal" here than they would be just 
searching for old discussions on your own, but remember, taking things 
personally is what causes so many problems for some people.
