Triffid,
Well, it's likely then that the programmer who wrote the "PIE Patch"
installer couldn't imagine any user having WinMX installed anywhere
else but in C:\Program Files, or was too lazy to offer a choice for the
desired location. I'm not sure though cuz I don't need to use the
installer.
Indeed the "PIE Patch" installer removes stuff from your "hosts" file,
it goes about doing that like this:
1. It reads the user's "hosts" file, removing any lines with the string
"winmx.com". This preserves the user's existing data, but removes
anything that was added in order to restore WinMX function.
2. It combines the user's "hosts" file (which now has WinMX references
removed) with the "PIE Patch" manual file, which only contains WinMX
references. The combined file is copied over the user's old "hosts"
file, yielding the updated one.
What makes you say though, that "the dll just destroys the hosts file"?
Has it done that in your case? Has the "ws2_32.dll" installer (v1.9)
actually destroyed your "hosts" file? Beside the fact that such action
is needless, I haven't heard of that happening before. Since I don't
need to use the installer myself, I can't easily verify this however,
you see.
