If by "upload" you mean "download", then the color should change from a
kind of blue to dark green, once a file starts to download. If instead
it turns red, then perhaps you're being ignored (for whatever reason)
by the person you're trying to download from.

You can have a look at what the appropriate colors should be in
"Settings", "Appearance", "Transfers Window".
