I believe they are connected.
The .ddl (winmxworld) patch uses one cache server which is also
connected to the wpn as a primary, and which distributes primary IP
addresses collected from searches passing through it.
The PIEpatch approach uses a number of stable cache servers.
Although Vladd44 and KM have argued about which system is the better, I
have seen nothing from either of them to indicate that the network is split.
