Well, before Usenet, broadband and the demise of Alan Bond, there was a
messaging system called Bulletin Boarding, which was dominated by Fidonet
(still in operation today, I believe).
Modems were all dialup, ranging from 1200 baud (bits per second) through
9,600 14,400, 28,800, 33,600 until the last of the dialups - today's 56k.
Can you imagine downloading at (approx.) 1k max.?
