The itunes software is the primary method of loading software from a
Windows 2k/XP or MacOS X system onto an iPod.
I have seen, on the net, a web site with a driver that allows a Win98
system to see an iPod as a USB device.
Also, note that since the shuffle doesn't have a display, so you are
pretty much at the mercy of the shuffle for playing.
I myself like the Rio Sports Forge as a low cost (about the same price
as Shuffle) MP3 player. Battery life is about the same, but it uses 1
AAA battery, which allows for easy swap out. And while the Forge, out
of the wrapper, only goes up to a 512 MB model, it supports at least a
1 GB SD or MMC chip.
This allows you at least 1.5 GB of music, which isn't bad.
