If you intend using an existing song, unless it clearly states that is is
"copyright free", then you simply contact the record company or more
commonly, the publisher (name will be on the CD or vinyl). You would need to
write to them direct and tell them precisely what you want to do with the
song or songs and if you may have written consent to use it. They may well
reply (as it's a school project), to grant consent without charge. Or they
may charge a token fee. They do of course have the right to charge you their
normal fee which. How much that might be I have no idea.
Any song is the copyright of the artist, publisher or record company. Most
will take a dim view of any unauthorised use of their material.
