Why not cut the silence out of the WAV's before encoding to MP3? Sure,
it adds some steps to the process, but in the end it's great. It also
means you can encode to other formats like Ogg Vorbis and likewise have
no silence in their files.

I use a program called WavTrim to trim the silence from my WAV's. I
don't know of any other small apps that do the job, let alone as well as
WavTrim.
