The decision depends on more much space you have for storage. If you have
plenty of hard drive space, I'd recommend using a lossless compression
format, such as FLAC or Monkey's Audio to store your CDs. You get about 1
1/2 times as much stuff in a given space that way. You can always burn a CD
from these files that's identical to the original. Some people buy an
external hard drive and connect it to the computer through USB 2.0. It
takes about 400MB to store a CD in that way.
My hearing is deficient, so I can get away with extra lossy encoding. I put
everything on one DVD-RAM disc at about 30:1 compression. I get about 400
CDs on a 2-sided disc. I wouldn't advise attempting that much compression
if you have normal hearing, however.
