This is my problem: I bought the Philips player, *including* the required
(indispensable, according to Philips) MMJB software to work it. I expect
there to be no additional 'hidden cost' of having to upgrade MMJB just to
use my Philips player!

I use WMP only occasionally to watch/listen to downloaded clips, but I never
had any trouble using it for this purpose.

Tried that, but the options keep getting reset by MMJB to their
user-unfriendly default values (or worse, ignored)!

There's no problem at all with my Philips player, it works fine. As
described above, however, I'm having a problem with MMJB and the company
behind it.
But I have indeed informed Philips of my sincere disenchantment with their
choice of bundled software.
