If you are after popular music, rather than what is available legally in
MP3 format. You're unlikely to find it. Record companies aren't willing
to release their tunes in an unprotected format like MP3. If you want to
stay legal (or at least ethical, depending on which country you live
in), your best option is to buy the CD and convert it to MP3 yourself.
It may cost you a bit more, but you get a permanent copy of the music
that you can play and convert to any format you want in the future.
Buying protected tunes is fine now, but what happens in the future when
new technology comes along that doesn't support the format you bought
the tunes on?
In your situation, I would use a file sharing network to download the
tunes ou have already paid for in MP3 format. As long as you don't share
what you are downloading with others then you aren't doing anything
wrong.
No one has ever beeen prosecuted for recording a CD they bought onto a
tape. The same principle applies to MP3, if you've bought the music
already then you aren't stealing by obtaining a copy..
