I would bet that the CDs themselves contain the clipping.

I've never needed anything else.

I doubt it would make an audible difference, but I would use API for
320 Kbps, personally.

It's virtually as good as 320, or even the CD itself, with AP-standard
or -extreme (I very occasionally use extreme for particularly dynamic
tracks, especially with vocals).
