There are better programs out there, such as the shareware Newsbin Pro,
but this one is free and a good starting point: http://www.shemes.com/ Lots
of information here on how it's done.
Chances are the usenet service that comes with your ISP account has a
very short retention period for binary news groups and some of the ISP
servers don't carry binary groups. On my server it's around 48 hours for
binary groups, while text groups will have 30 to 60 days retention. There
are any number of premium usenet servers that have retention periods of 30
to 70 days on binary groups starting at around $7 a month and topping out at
$25 for unlimited access on a top of the heap server.
Alt.binaries.sounds.mp3.complete_cd is a good starting point, but
there are quite a few binary groups for MP3s and most of them are more
specialized.
If you have broadband service your next two questions are where you
store everything and how to organize it. Part of the answer is:
www.musicbrainz.org , MP3Tag, Media Monkey and there are reasons why big
hard drives are selling so well. My ISP just bumped up my speed. With a
premium server I can download binary files at 6Mbps.
