Depends. iTunes (at least on Macs) can use the Lame encoder for mp3s,
which is, I understand, regarded as generally OK. iTunes encoded AACs
can be played on any player that can play AACs, and that list includes
far more players than the iPod (although not for iTunes Music Store
DRMed downloads, granted). You do know that AAC is an open format,
don't you?

Apart from the fact that you are pretty much wrong, anyone who posts to
usenet in html automatically loses any claim to credibility whatsoever,
let alone about pronouncements on technical standards.
