You would be wrong. LAME isn't made for profit, and the LAME developers
have real jobs and other projects going on. And on top of that, they
really are trying to make LAME the best that it can be.

In 3.96, try --alt-preset standard --vbr-new. In 3.97b2, try -V2
--vbr-new. They're the same setting, really, but expect 3.97b2 to
perform better. Using VBR New greatly increases the encoding speed
compared to the default VBR method, and it doesn't really hurt the sound
quality.
