I'm probably wrong on this but I'll have a go... Is it Polka from the
Shostakovich Jazz suite #1?
It has a xylophone part that sounds similar to what you're describing.
If they played only that part you wouldn't know there were any other
instruments in it.
It might not be quite the same plonks as you're describing but it has a
part an octave or so above. Could be another part of the jazz suite.
