Thanks again for the replies.
I actually went back and encoded several other tracks using alt-preset
standard and they weren't too much greater in size than the 192 CBR ones.
The first track or two that I tried must have been a bit misrepresentative
of the larger picture. I have pulled in the lame.exe file for use as an
external encoder, but haven't experimented with it yet. I will tonight or
tomorrow. Currently, I'm using 3.96.1, and 128-320 kbps is what shows up on
the CDex interface when choosing alt-preset standard. I imagine I could
just tweek the lower limit a bit and bring it down to, say, 64 kbps, if I
care about reducing file size a bit. But for all I know, the 128-320 range
may be the best battle-tested numbers for the 3.96.1 version of alt-preset
standard.
Thanks again....I'll just keep experimenting now, and pretty soon I'll know
what I want to stick with for good.
