*Preface* the file name with numbers. Have enough places in the number
to equal or exceed the number of places in the quantity of files on the
disc.

The problem with what you are doing lies in long names vs. DOS names.
With 8 character DOS names, similarly named files use 6 alpha characters
followed by ~1, ~2, etc. Those numbers are assigned by date of the
file, not by the number you gave it since that number isn't within the
first 6 characters.
