If I remember correctly, the only study I know of which looked for
benefits from bus lanes (by the Transport Research Laboratory, who do a
lot of studies for the government) discovered that they were
ineffectual at best, and counterproductive at worst. The bus lanes
cause unnecessary congestion which means the bus gets held up any time
it needs to merge with the other traffic on the road (e.g. at a
junction)... they'd get to their destination faster if the traffic was
free-flowing and there was no bus lane.
