From what I've read they've been keeping the prices artificially high to
get the most profit as there's not many manufacturing plants in
competition with each other, but also that DL media has the highest
failure rate during the manufacturing process of any CD/DVD media - hence
the extortionate prices.

I bought a spindle of 10 for 24 for my original Star Wars trilogy
transfer from laserdisc, went through 7 and all of them failed verify,
that's like wasting 70 single layer DVD-R's in one go! SVP weren't much
help, just said something about have I got the latest firmware etc., of
course I have. With regards to dual layer my Pioneer 108 burner is fucked
it seems :( it has no problems with single layers

I'm all for a severe price decrease of dual layer discs.
