Looking for recommendations for a DVD recorder with freeview tuner.

Basically the wife is fed up with a DVD player, VCR, and freeview box
cluttering up the place. She is fed up with having to set the freeview box
to the channel she wants to record and then recording it on the VCR, while
remembering not to change the freeview channel (and preventing the kids from
doing the same!).

Are most dvd recorders available to playback multiregion DVDs as that would
be a requirement, as would optical output for connection to a 5.1 channel
amp? Is it a simple matter of connecting a VCR and recording onto DVDR (+/-
no idea what the benefits of either are!?) the pre-recorded videos we have
(mainly the kids rubbish) or would there be some problems with macrovision
protection?

Have seen a PANASONIC DMRES20D which seems to fit the bill, if it could be
made multi-region compatible that is. Anyone seen any reviews, have any
experience of it, or have a better recommendation.
