Been through the same pain.

Wanted 'hard' buttons, with every button learnable (not like
Kamelion & others that will learn any button but won't
learn more than about 30 in all).

Settled on MX-500 from a UK source and have one each for
living room, bedroom etc. They can clone setups between them
which is a good way to start. Main disadvantage is no
'coloured' buttons, but its easy to program as words on
the LCD (NOT touch screen) buttons. Prices vary £45 to £80.
Been using them for a couple of months with 0 problems
