If it has a test tone function to each speaker try that, then you know the
speakers are getting the seperate signals. IMHO a lot of movies fail to make
good use of the 5.1 sound.

Most of the time you will get sound coming from all speakers , giving you
the surround effect, where it kicks in for example is when say a car whizzes
past front to back and it sounds that way, but you also get a lot of subtle
effects like maybe something falling over behind you etc.

what movies do you already have , then maybe someone can point you to a
particular scene.
