A well set up surround sound system should only very occasionally draw
attention to the rear speakers throgh "discrete" effects. Don't forget
that the movie is in front of you, on the screen. Sound engineers try
their best to creat an all encompassing surround effect, with spot
effects only used to highlight very particular moments.
In general, a system where you can hear the rear speakers all the time
is incorrectly calibrated. The soundstage should be evenly distributed,
withthe emphasis towards the front.
A lot of folk buy into DD5.1 and DTS and expect to hear all sorts of
things flying around the room on every film they watch. Good home
cinema isn't about that, it's about the immersive experience.
Get yourself a copy of Titan AE or Saving Private Ryan - these two
films have fantastically mixed DTS soundtracks which will give you an
indication of what you should exect from a good 5.1 mix.
