You mean "didn't used to do it right". They did it right with the first
HD home movie releases (D-Theater), and did it right with the first HD
home movie releases on disc (WMV on DVD-ROM). It's quite likely they
will continue this, in part because Microsoft thinks it can make a great
deal of money in the HD realm if they can be the carrier for protected
content.
Then, too, there's the fact that DirecTV, Dish, and cable companies were
having their product stolen left and right, but now it's down to a very
small trickle. The content providers are learning, and we're the big
losers in all this, because they're gonna try to go with this "pay for
play" model anywhere they think it will work. Even if it doesn't work
in the long run, it will suck in the short run.
