Er, so he "created" by making it more like the original book?

The whole thing for me was pointless. It wasn't vastly different from the
original.
Nothing new in it to write home about, and what _was_ new, was done better
in the original anyway.

I brought two 4-5 year old girls. They both "enjoyed" it, although the older
child didn't like the ending.
We came out the door of the cinema and they sang "Willy Wonka, Willy Wonka"
down the steps. By the time we turned the corner towards the car they were
both singing "Oompa-Doompa-Doompadeedoo", which lasted all the way home.

That said it all really. Later, the older child said she prefers the 70s
version. I agree. It was just a lot more "magical".

I agree with that. I watched this whole movie waiting to find it. Possibly
making the dead author happy doesn't really cut it to my mind.
