Maxell is owned by Hitachi.

There is a lot of rebranding going on, but unfortunately you have two
things to overcome if you want to get them:

1) The rebranders do not put the MID on the package so you don't know
what you are getting. They do put the country of origin on which you
can sometimes use to identify a particular manufacturer. The old rule
was that anything Made in Japan was high quality.

2) Market demand has soared over the past couple years and the
manufacturers are scrambling to meet that demand. New plants are going
up in Taiwan, Singapore, India, et al. These plants are new and do put
out bad lots which manufacturers sell to rebranders. One exception is
Taiyo Yuden, which only sells its own discs under its brand name.

I got 100 Verbatim 16x DVD -Rs which were made by Mitsubishi Chemical
Corp, the owners of Verbatim. The MID was MCC 03RG20. They are popular
with some of the CDFreaks, second to TY. I had 10 coasters out of 90
burns. The problem was dye splotching, which is a major defect.

So now I am left with TY brand and thankfully I can get them for a
good price at supermediastore.com or rima.com. Even meritline.com has
recently lowered its price.

TY does not make RWs, at least not for the US market. So I use
Verbatim DVD +RWs in my DVDR. I fully erase them first and then format
them with the DVDR. I have had very good performance from them thus
far. I got 30 for under $30 at Sam's Club.
