That's because the govt let high school graduates run nuclear reactors
when Ph.D. physicists were driving cabs to make a living.

If the govt really wanted to produce energy with fusion reactors, then
they would spend the money to do it.

Just think of the millions of jobs that would be lost if fusion energy
were available.
