My company wants to start using DVDs to make backups of our Process
Control Computer Systems. Presently, we are using CDs for the smaller
ones and off-line hard drives for the bigger ones.

My concern is that the DVD backups may not be safe. "PI" "PO" My
reading on this is that the media is fine for Video and other
non-critical applications but hardly reliable enough to use for
data/system backups. I have suggested that we get a Lite-On drive and
run some tests but this advice appears to have fallen on deaf ears.
I'm pretty sure that they will just make a backup, do a restore as a
test and then consider the method sound. I haven't seen any test
results which show if these errors grow over time depending on storage
temp or handling. Also, should we define the media and drive we want
to use (I'd say so but I could be wrong).

What I'm looking for is a white paper describing how a Medium to Large
Company has set up their backup policy. Complete with initial design
and tests performed. I'm sure that somebody has done this but can't
find any mention in my searches.

thanks for any pointers or assistance...thehick
