Too much dynamic range on DVDs - most players 'suffer' this problem.
Basically music etc is mixed to be as consistently loud as possible the
whole time whereas movies are set so that the biggest sound peak (explosion
etc) is mixed to max volume but the rest of the stuff (dialogue etc) is
comparatively rather quiet.

Some DVD players have a menu option to adjust the dynamic range so that
quiet sounds are louder.

Best solution is to get a surround amp and put it in night mode on DD5.1 -
that will soften the loudest peaks and let you hear dialogue etc easier.
