I have a DMRES30 (VCR/DVD combo) and I too got cheesed off with having
the DMRES30 between the i-Player digitv decoder and the TV, so I put
AV1 on the DMRES30 on scart 2 on the decoder, and the TV on scart 1.
So now I can record the five normal channels thanks to the analogue
tuner in the DMRES30 while watching digital TV. And record a digital
TV channel while watching it. If I want to watch a recorded DVD then
I have to turn the decoder off but that's not a problem.

My Panasonic is great for little money (£250 for a multi-region at
Richer Sounds) but Panasonic documentation and UK customer service
sadly sucks rather badly...
