if by dvd you mean a dvd that you can buy in the shop - then no.
they are standard definition - 720x576interlaced for PAL material.
there's nothing to stop you storing a hi def file on a dvd blank disc and
playing it back from your pc - but a dvd player wont be able to do anything
with it.

the players with 1080i output merely interpolate the image - it's not HD
quality, and it's what your hi def screen would be doing anyway - so it's
simply whether the dvd player does a better job of it than your screen
