Well, that depends on what you regard as 'don't gain anything'...

When the movie is converted to PAL it is converted to 25fps thus making it
run 4% fast. (And possibly shifting the audio pitch)
When the movie is converted to NTSC it is kept at 24fps using 3:2 pulldown
within the 30fps. This does introduce a slight shudder on slow horizontal
pans but is all but removed when de-interlacing with the 3:2 pulldown
reversed and removed...

One could also argue that 50Hz flicker is more noticeable than 60Hz flicker,
but YMMV.
