Some years ago when they were developing burnabld DVD standards, -R
was the "official" format and a few companies didn't want to pay for
the right so they developed the rogue format the +R. RW version of
both + and - came out first and then the R version later. It's
interesting to note +RW came out a year after -RW but +R came out a
good couple years before -R came out.
Right now most burners can take both format so it's a moot point. If
you're going to burn video for DVD player, you'll need to experiment
and see which works the best as some DVD players would only work with
-R while others only +R. A good number (like 80% or so) will work
find with both format if they are made as proper DVD-Video format.
DVD-RAM is complately different format better suited to data backup
and archival. It is NOT compatible with most DVD players (almost
all?) and it's hard to find DVD-RAM burner or blanks in most local
stores.
