I let everything cool down and then plugged it all together and for a while
everything was working and then I lost the LAN again. It does indeed look
like it is something flaky in the router.

I didn't have any software tools with the router just the installation disk
which put drivers onto my PC. This does smell like hardware issue rather
than a DHCP or networking problem so back to the shop it goes.
