OK, how about the rather good (and available on DVD) "Children of the
Stones" (set in Avebury (well, Avebury with a fictitious name), so
nothing much to do with Jodrell Bank, although there may well have
been mention of Jodrell Bank)?

Also nothing like your description, except that it's a British
children's sf type series and has children in it, and is in the right
decade. I'd expect the series you remember to be linked to it in
IMDB, but there's nothing like it.
