Now you're asking the right question . . .

Look for one that has, at a minimum, blue only, cross-pulse, and underscan.
The JVC already mentioned is as good as any. I'd personally prefer it to
ANY of the Sony PVM's, as the Sony's tend to compress the blacks. This
makes the your signal look great on them (and folks to say "WOW, that looks
great, you must be a great shooter"), but they're showing the picture better
than it really is. I prefer accuracy.

If you have the stomach to buy used, then for the same $500 or so, get an
Ikegami TM13-xxx or TM19-xxx. They are true broadcast-grade monitors, as
opposed to the lesser industrial monitors mentioned earlier and elsewhere in
this thread. As such, they have all the controls mentioned earlier, plus
easy-to-get-to adjustments for centering, horizontal & vertical size, as
well as RGB adjustments for gain and background. These last 2 allow you to
"white balance" and "black balance" your monitor accurately, and are hidden
on all the industrial grade monitors I've ever seen. They also have on/off
settings for trap or comb filtering, as well as for aperture.

As a first-time buyer, these features may be overkill, and making
adjustments to the gain and background _do_ require scopes and a bit of
training, so it is possible to mess them up by tweaking willy-nilly. But
personally, after using a "real" broadcast monitor, I'll never go back to a
plain ol' industrial for critical monitoring.

That's my $.02 . . .
