I work at a networkthat uses both Betacam SP and DVCam, so I'll say
this...

I CAN tell the difference between a Betacam 1st generation and a live
signal. I cannot spot a difference with DVCam. I don't know how many
times I've talked back to talent, only to find it's a tape. But as a
poster noted, Betacam wins hands down for ruggedness. We KILL our kits
and studio/edit decks.

And the sound is better on DVCam, too.
