Steve, a couple of things for you to try.
#1. Make sure the "Output" switch is set to the "auto knee" position.
This allows a more gradual slope into excessive whites.
#2. By default, this camera (I run 2 of the 550 series at work) has
the white clip set to 108 IRE. This can be reset to 100 IRE by holding
down the "white balance" switch (i.e. push the switch up) and turning
the power on at the same time. This brings up a menu screen where you
can change this setting.

That's about it for suggestions other than to turn the zebra pattern on
and use it constantly. Unless I'm in a "run & gun" situation (rare) I
run my cameras in manual mode. The lens should have a button on the
top of it to allow you to do a quick iris set. This is quite handy.
