I recently went the G5 and Final Cut route after a lot of thought. But I am
a cheapskate so needed to make some concessions to ease my conscience over
parting with all that money!<g>
I bought a refurbished G5 Powermac from Apple which saved me quite a bit. I
also bought the Formac monitor instead of the Apple monitor. So far as I
can see, the only think that has been tampered with in the G5 is one CD
sleeve has been opened! The sales guy said many "refurbished" macs have
never been out of the box and are just returned because the purchaser
changed his mind. But they won't sell them as new. They carry the same
guarantees, etc.
I also purchased a full retail unopened copy of Final Cut Pro 4 off Ebay at
about half the normal retail price.
I am still learning about both so can't comment further, except to say the
Mac is beautifully built which alone is reassuring. I bought a PC for the
office about the same time from PCWorld and politeness prohihits me from
commenting! Let's say it is comparing a Rolls Royce with a Ford Escort --
both do the same job but there are a lot more spares and add ons available
for the Ford - but I still know which I'd choose, if I had the money!
