You get an *idea* what Apple claims they should be, yes.

Right. Now factor in display brightness, and even recently a
rumor that turning on multiple "clocks" in your iPod (for
various time zones) will cause performance issues (and likely
more battery drain), and you can guess that battery life is
highly variable. plus, battery life when new is not going to
reflect what it will be months down the road.
