At the top of the monitor window is a little arrow.  If you click on it, a 
drop-down menu appears.  At the bottom of the drop-down menu is a selection 
for Playback Settings.  Click on that. 
 
Look for a selection on the following menu for audio preview (I don't recall 
exactly what it is called).  There are two choices: play audio on dv 
hardware and play audio on analog.  Select analog, and preview audio will 
play on your computer's sound system, rather than being directed to the 
1394/Firewire port.
