Yes, you're right.

I'm still wondering if only the PAL version will output a 4:3 image,
it would explain why more than 1 poster has reported that the FX1
won't do this.

Anyway, rethinking the matter, I don't think I'll gain much, if
anything, shooting the job in HDV. I'm not likely to be asked to
provide client with an HDV cut in the future either.

I'll save a hell of a lot of time by shooting in DV (and the
viewfinder guide for the 4:3 image will display, so tighter framing),
so will now shoot HDV. Job is tomorrow a.m. Still getting familiar
with the camera (it's certainly a huge improvement in features over
the VX). I wondered why Sony make only a 0.8x wide converter for the
FX1 (VX2K had a 0.7x). Suddenly hit me that this camera is *already*
wide. Doh ....!
