Thank you to all of you who responded on this board. Your advice and
support was very helpful.

So I figured it out and it was so simple I almost couldn't stop
laughing for about 10 minutes (it could also be the fact that I hadn't
slept in like 4 days). After the audio mix down didn't work, I copied
a small media file to my desk top and played it through Quicktime. It
played fine, telling me that the problem was not the data on my
firewire drive or the computer. Being the Young Sherlock Holmes that I
am, I deduced that if the problem was not either the computer or the
drive, it must be in how information is getting from the drive to the
computer. I switched my cable from the first port to the second and
all the problems disappeared. I was completely finished with
everything I had to do about 40 minutes later.

It's always the little things. I feel stupid, but also relieved.
