the better the camera the better the end result. after it's captured
you can only take away from the detail you can add.

i haven't seen the VX1000 for rent, but i've seen HDV cameras in the
same price range for rent at $180 a month, so i can't imagine it would
be too far off that price. i'd rent it, instead of buying it. like
bernard said, it's ten years old. which means they've probably
engineered it until it was done needing engineering, but it's also
yesterdays news. i strongly don't recommend buying it. i bought an
XL1s just before HDV made the scene a few months later. renting is the
best for doing short projects, also you'll gain experience with a
larger ranger of cameras. eventually if you become successful at this
you might want to consider buying a camera, but for now it's really not
worth it.
