This is the best advice of the thread. Why does every newbie assume he
must BUY the camera, especially for small, short-duration projects,
with lots of dead time in between? Rent EVERYTHING: it's cheaper than
buying, and thus you can afford to rent better gear than you'd ever get
for the same money as a purchase. You also never have to worry about
obsolescence or paying the thing off.
If you think you are in the game for the long haul, buy only those
items that are cheaper to won than rent: tripod, mics, quality
all-around light kit. These particular items retain their resale value
better too, so if you decide to quit, you'll get more of your money
back.
