You're up against the physics of sound : Close mic-ing is necessary to get
good sound for dialog, especially in environments where you can't control
the ambient sound. As you mentioned, on a relatively close shot, you can
use a boom and shotgun, but using wider shots usually means some kind of
wireless mics.

Beware the audio dealer who tries to sell you some miracle mic that defies
this principle. Also beware the editor who says that he can filter it out
or punch it up in post. You'll probably wind up disappointed.

But you probably will fall for one or both of these traps. Most of us did.
Just do it and learn as you go. Few "first" projects are really
screen-worthy anyway. Making these mistakes builds your storehouse of
knowledge.
